Hi Adrian, I think it would be important to add to your answer on copyright that you can translate whatever you like privately but you can't put the content online or otherwise publish it, even if you are not being paid or using it for marketing purposes.

I honestly love take courses. I have seen many good ones in my pair of languages. But, I think that I would invest money in a course if I will use that info as a new service like voiceovering, transcreation, and digital marketing. I love motivational and philosophical topics, but I get lost when I have many questions in mind😂. I have to say podcasts are valuable, interesting and free. I learn languages, translation, and digital marketing through these. I just love them!😃

Sure it feels supportive, sure it is welcoming but sometimes I have the impression that it's turning more and more into Facebook, even though that's with most industries too. However I see very few translators actually using this social media to show their skills and all they have to offer. What do you think about this? Hi Adrian. This freelanceverse’s workshop is a so good idea. It’s nice to know that as a translator you have enough work to make it a good living. Although I finished my translation studies in 2020, I only started to work as a translator about 2 months ago. The most difficult for me was/is the isolation as I don’t know any other translator. I would have loved to find a community group to connect with new translators and where we could help each other and as well to find a mentor. I follow you since the beginning of your RUclips channel and I enjoy that you remain true to yourself and enjoyed this new unfiltered format. Chrystele.

As for the last question, Wikipedia can be another ckoice too. As far as I can remember, Robert at Freelance translation tips channel uploaded an interesting video a couple of years ago that can be so helpful for beginners. Hello Adrian, im new on your channel as well as to freelancer translation and id like to pose a question, if you dont mind: how do translators plan their vacations in terms of finnances, i mean: supose one wants to spend a full month away from the office, what can help this person to make a good saving and planning in terms of money? I know this kind of question is not exactly from the field of translation, but from finnances, but since youre experient with the life of a freelancer i thought you might had some personal advice for it. I’ve only recently started seriously considering translation as a job. I know French and Spanish, Portuguese but very rusty so doesn’t count atm, and I’m currently learning Thai and Korean.

How can I negotiate translation service to the clients?

As a polyglot Native in Turkish and Arabic, fluent in Korean , English and Spanish with intermediate knowledge in Japanese language... i should be rich. Can't find a job though, any advice, help?

Hi Adrian, I am from IRAQ 🇮🇶 and recently learned that a job like freelance interpreting exists. I wonder if it is feasible in countries like Iraq.( I mean Does it work for all countries or just Western countries? ) Another point is that payment methods like PayPal are not supported in Iraq.

It is a great video as always. I feel like you at this point. I have enough clients and sometimes people offer me more jobs. I just feel thankful. Freelancing is also difficult at the beginning but you will be fine over time. Finally, I recommend Proz Pro Bono to everyone as you mention Adrian. I have made many translation projects. One tip is asking for translation projects to Andrew Morris because it is your first time. He will consider your situation and give you a translation project quicker. 😊 Good luck!

Thank you very much for this interesting and informative video. This was the type of information I could have used when I started as a full-time freelance translator in the language combination English to Danish in March 2016. My passion is also the technical area, so I chose to specialize in the technical area in 2018. My reason for starting working as a self-employed translator was actually a diagnosis of ADHD in 2014 (then I was 49 years old), so I had to change my approach to my work life. As I have always been curious about machinery and generally passionate about technology, it was an obvious choice for me to specialize in the technical area. Furthermore, the "frames" of technical translation, as mentioned in the video, matches perfectly with my attention deficit :0).

I myself recently graduated in linguistics and communication and I'm aspiring to pursue a career within translation with SWE/ENG <--> SPA as target languages. However, you have mentioned translation portfolios on your videos several times, could you show/explain how a translation portfolio looks like? What it should contain and so on? I've only seen portfolios for graphic design and similar fields. Thank you !

Interesting to hear you talk about the state of the industry for freelancers. I've been working full-time as a freelancer for almost 3 years now, and my experience has been quite similar to yours, i.e.: - I keep hearing from other freelancers how they're losing clients, rates are going down, and the only thing they're asked to do is MTPE. - But in my own experience, I've never lacked for work, my rates have steadily gone up, and demand is robust. There is a bit more demand for MTPE these days, but it's far from dominant. I wonder if part of it has to do with specific language combinations. As I live in Sweden, most of the translators I speak to are Swedish, working with the Swedish language (especially combined with English and/or other Nordic languages), and many are struggling. I, however, mostly work with Japanese. MT works much better between European languages than with Japanese, and Japanese companies tend to be quite uncomfortable with giving Big Tech companies access to their documents, so they don't like MT. Could there be any similarities with Swiss and German clients?

Secondly, I wanted to ask some questions because I know you have a lot of videos but I get overwhelmed quite easily so I didn't know where to begin my freelance translation journey. I speak English (I don't know if I can call it fluently but I can speak to my international friends and understand them very well so does it count as fluent?) and I want to start my career in this industry, I'm still 17 and I don't know how should I begin it. My main questions would be: - How can I gain experience with translation, if I don't have any professional jobs, and I need experience to get jobs? - How can I get jobs to start getting money? Which platforms should I use and how can I advertise myself? - How do I set up prices for my translations? - Do I need certifications (for example, course certificates, proficiency and language certificates) to prove my skills? - which tools should I use? Which ones do you recommend that are free and beginner-friendly? Which ones do you recommend me to use when I'm already used to translation? And more specific: which videos do you think a beginner should watch in your channel? Are there any ones who need subtitles? If there are I'm offering myself to help 😂 I'm sorry for this big text but I sincerely would be so thankful if you could answer it when it's best for you. Wow I didn't expect you to expand more on my question, a nice surprise indeed! I would like to ask, how can a young man starting his 1st year in university (translation obviously) be as ready as possible to strongly enter the work domain when he is done? I want to stand out from the others and not let declining rates affect me so that I can always have enough income to satisfy me (and perhaps a family if I get the chance to establish one?) I already got 1 month of experience volunteering for Ted-Ed but it obviously is not enough.

ProZ Pro Bono is a great option for volunteer work. They send about two to three projects each week for my language pairs, it is a bit difficult to be selected for the project sometimes though. It is really good to build portfolio because it shows on your ProZ profile how many words you translated as a volunteer, I really enjoy working with them. Great video Adrian :)

I LOVE languages to the point I can literally stay up studying Greek or Chinese but for me it's not just the passion that is everything I would like a degree in a science field because it would just come off handy when even deeling with everyday life.

Localization is a completely different skillset to straight translation. After decades of translation, my brain just isn't wired for it. I've been asked to a few times, but my mental "Making crap up! Making crap up!" alarms immediately start going off. It's best left to a second person or team, but ONLY with the input of the translator to check their work and warn them if they're straying too far afield.
